With school back in session that means Fall is just around the corner! Unfortunately, it’s still too hot to wear sweaters and drink lattes, but we can still get ready by looking at these stunning pictures from Michelle and Zach’s wedding last fall. Her flowers are a great way to use those dark, moody colors with pops of lightness and doesn't necessarily scream "Fall". Michelle made such a beautiful bride and these pictures are some of our favorites!

Meet Randee Gagnon: Owner of The Floral Cottage

All Photography by Kaylie Nicole Photography

All Photography by Kaylie Nicole Photography

Randee has been married to her husband, Laurent, for 7 years and together they have two daughters: Violet (5) and Scarlett (2). She graduated from Louisiana State University in Communication Disorders and continued on to get her masters in Speech Language Pathology. She practiced for 6 years and once Violet was born she decided it was a good opportunity to focus on her family and to start pursuing her career in floral design. Her passion has always been in creativity and what better way to fulfill those needs then to take over the family wedding floral business.

She became owner in January 2019 which means that she does everything from washing out buckets, to consulting with brides and designing arrangements. She does business tasks such as ordering products and flowers, to processing payroll. It seems like she is always doing something relating to the business and makes the most out of her time. Her staff agrees that she is a great leader and boss and really promotes being creative in whatever your job is. Very rarely is she frazzled and her most said phrase is “I can make it work” and she does exactly that.

Here are some more fun facts about Randee:

How long have you worked at the Floral Cottage?

I've worked there periodically since it opened on my 15th birthday in 1999. A few hours here and there after school then learning and working more in college and graduate school. But....I made my first floral arrangement around the age of 11 at my mom's florist job (before The Floral Cottage) and the owner was shocked when is sold to a customer! My origins go back even further than that. When I was a kid, I had to do a "how-to" presentation and I did "how to make a boutonniere".

What part of your job is most rewarding?

Seeing the bride's reaction to her flowers is the most rewarding but my favorite part is seeing it all come together from the bride's vision to the flowers to the colors.

What is a little known fact about you?

I’m ambidextrous! I also love to cook in my spare time and cook almost anything.

What is your coffee drink order?

My favorite things are ever changing, but it's usually a grande medium roast coffee with cream OR a grande cold brew with cold foam. Nothing too sugary!

What is the last show on Netflix that you binged?

Stranger Things

Lastly, bringing it back to flowers, what is your favorite flower?

I absolutely love orchids. All types! Every time we travel, we try to find botanical gardens with orchids to see. I soak up all of the flower knowledge everywhere I go!

KaitlynandNickReineEdit-550.jpg

When Kaitlyn first told me that she was getting married at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Reserve a ton of childhood memories came to me. That is where I went to church growing up and where my family still attends to this day. I will still go from time to time and if we have flowers leftover from the week, I’ll bring them to place on the headstones of family members that are buried there. That’s actually a great way of re-using flowers after a wedding and we have a blog post coming soon  on other things you can do with your wedding flowers after the big day!

We were able to get a bunch of great flowers for Kaitlyn and Nick’s wedding. We had some gorgeous panda anemones, white peonies, pink majorlika spray roses and the most fragrant genestra! We also incorporated some of the same flowers in her rehearsal dinner arrangements.

Congratulations again Kaitlyn and Nick! We hope the last 6 months have been filled with wedded bliss!

Shelby was referred to us by Amy who is now her sister-in-law, but is also a member of the Floral Cottage Florist staff! I had heard good things about Shelby before meeting her and they all turned out to be true. She was so nice when we finally got to meet and talk about her wedding! She gave me a lot of free reign when it came to her colors and types of flowers.  Her bridesmaids wore the popular blush color dresses so I wanted to make sure the flowers complimented the dresses, but also stood out. That is where the pink floyd roses came in! They are some of my favorites and when using them in an arrangement I can’t help but hum a Pink Floyd song or two. I’m a huge Pink Floyd fan! Needless to say, I had a fun time with Shelby’s arrangements and think her wedding turned out so beautiful. See for yourself!

Q & A FROM THE BRIDE {Whitney}:

1. What was your overall wedding style/theme?

The overall theme of my wedding was a mix of bohemian and rustic.

2. How did you choose your wedding color palette?

I chose my wedding color palette from Pinterest, honestly. I showed Randee the colors and what I wanted and she honestly nailed the color scheme better than I thought possible. It went perfect with the bridesmaid dresses!

3. What inspired your wedding floral style? (i.e. pinterest, a friend, our social media, etc.)

My floral style was very bohemian. I wanted my flowers to be very free flowing with no “shape.” I saw a lot of the Floral Cottage's styles like this on their social media so it was easy to explain to her what I wanted as she was very used to this style. I wanted lots and lots of flowers falling and draping down. Randee gave me the idea of adding ribbon hanging from my bouquets which I loved. She also had flowers hanging from the boutonnieres, which I personally haven't seen much of, so I thought this was very unique and she incorporated the bullet casings just as I asked! I wanted different, unique flowers and I honestly couldn't say any more that the Flower Cottage just plain NAILED IT! Randee took my ideas/pictures and ran with it!

4. What was your favorite part about your wedding day flowers?

EVERYTHING, PLAIN AND SIMPLE! The service from start to finish, the delivery man was sweet, and the overall presentation of my flowers! Everything was organized and labeled which made the day that much less stressful!

My theme was antique/rustic.

2. How did you choose your wedding color palette?

Q & A from the BRIDE {Emily}:

1. What was your overall wedding style/theme?

I did not really have a theme for my wedding; I kind of picked a color palette and went with it; I wanted a combination of traditional and modern concepts; ex: my dress had long sleeves and my guys wore black tuxedos, but my bridesmaids dresses and flowers I thought were a more modern or unique concept.

2. How did you choose your wedding color palette?

I browsed pinterest A LOT! Since it was a spring wedding, I knew I couldn't do any really bold colors. I also did not want to choose a color like blush which I feel like a lot of people do; my color palette was basically gold and the color of my bridesmaid dresses which was Vintage Iris. It is kind of like a mauve or dusty rose. I added hints of greenery in there as well to tie in my flowers.

3. What inspired your wedding floral style? (i.e. pinterest, a friend, our social media, etc.)

Again, I browsed pinterest a lot. I always thought I wanted a big bouquet of peonies or roses, but when I saw these bouquets of mostly greenery and no flowers at all I loved it! Since I did not have a clear theme or color palette really, I didn't have to worry about making sure things coordinated or matched because it was 90% greenery.

4. What was your favorite part about your wedding day flowers?

I loved my wedding bouquet! It was perfect for a spring wedding! I loved how different it was from other weddings I had been to. I also loved my boutonnieres! We were able to include the fishing lures as a nod to my husband. For my dad's he had a gum ball (from a gum tree) which I thought was super cool and unique.

Emily Kleinpeter-14.jpg

THANK YOU!

Thank you Emily for allowing us to be creative with your wedding day flowers! We truly enjoyed the unusual textures and unique ideas of your bouquets and boutonnieres. It's not everyday we get to design all green bouquets and fishing lure boutonnieres. We appreciate the opportunity!

Sweet, sweet anemone

Anemones have been a much requested flower from our brides! Anna was no exception.

Let's start with our new addition, Scarlett Kate! She was born on August 15 which was, coincidentally, the one year anniversary of the 2016 flood that devastated our little community. She was born healthy and happy, but has been a LOT of work since then! People aren't kidding when they say the second child is a game changer. I haven't slept well since the 2nd trimester of my pregnancy! My apologies in advance if I have trouble composing a sentence or call you by the wrong name. Ha! Kids are no joke! Since her arrival, I've been working a lot from home while Becky has been working from our cute and freshly renovated flower shop.

FLOWER SHOP RENOVATIONS

Finally, after over a year, our flower shop has been renovated! Back in 2016, Becky's home as well as our flower shop flooded. We were in survival mode from day one and hit our Fall and Spring wedding seasons hard. Summer arrived and we were able to breathe long enough to finish our flower shop renovations and prepare for the arrival of Baby Scarlett.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FLORIST

2017 brought us beautiful flowers, great opportunities and sweet brides trusting us to design their wedding day flowers. That's what it's all about after all!

Kaylie from Kaylie Nicole Photography stopped by during the height of our busy October wedding season to capture a day at the flower shop. Here are some of our favorites!

Hello 2018!

In 2018, I hope that I can make great growth both personally and professionally. I will be focusing on my children first and foremost while also continuing to build professional relationships with fabulous wedding vendors in southern Louisiana and all of our upcoming 2018 & 2019 brides. My mom, Becky, and I would love the opportunity to design for those brides who'd love a creative, stylish and hard-working floral team. We are constantly evolving and improving our designs, expanding our repertoire by trying new things and making the best possible experience for our brides. We appreciate the opportunities that 2017 brought us and we look forward to growing even more in 2018! Thanks for all of your continued support and encouragement over the years. Here's to a fantastic 2018!

Hugs & Kisses,

Randee & Becky

2017 Update!

2017 Update: Since flooding in August 2016, we have been in survival mode! Between getting Becky's home renovated after the flood, our wedding workload in 2016/2017 and expecting a baby, we have been busy to say the least. It's finally time to take care of our little flooded flower shop! We made quick repairs to get our flower shop functioning after the flood, but it hasn't been pretty. We are closing the entire month of August to get our flower shop renovated back to a cute little cottage as well as enjoy the upcoming arrival of my baby girl. During this time, we will be slightly delayed in responding to your emails, social media messages and phone messages. We will get back to you as soon as possible! Once everything returns to normal, if there is a "normal", I plan on continuing the monthly blog featuring our beautiful brides on their wedding day. Regular business will resume in September and I'll be back to work for the start of our busy fall wedding season in October. We appreciate all of your support and understanding during this difficult year! I promise to post photos of our flower shop once it's finished. :)

Hugs & Kisses,

Randee
